As a boy, Charles attended local school 2 months in summer, 2 months in winter. In his memoir, Charles claims he was “a backward scholar until 15 or 16…when I began to make some proficiency in English grammar and arithmetic…I never…studied geography…never read history to the amount of a good-sized octavo volume, nor half so much in works of fiction…” It’s clear Charles wasn’t the classically trained scholar many of his fellow Dartmouth students or Massachusetts doctors would have been.
